350.org and the Fight for Authenticity

November 6, 2009

Nothing will happen in a month at the Copenhagen Climate meetings and that is a bummer.  It’s a bummer because it makes the work of the 350.org folks harder.   A grassroots effort, sprung from the mind of Press Forward advisor, Bill McKibben, 350 has pulled in support for their cause from around the globe.  Check out the constant stream of photos on the front of their homepage.  Moreover check out how they that did something that no one has done, they put authenticity front and center in Times Square, NYC and around the globe.  On the electronic billboards, their message ran true and wholesome next to the typical stream of flickering beer slogans.  This rams home the point that authenticity is rare and when it does happen (especially in an environment like Times Square) it captures people.  Human beings are captured by authenticity, we’re constantly searching for it in its most recent incarnation.  Now its up to 350.org and similar organizations to continue the friction created when authenticity and the rest of the world collide.
